Metropolitan Historic Courthouse Restoration / Restoration

The Metropolitan Historic Courthouse project was a challenging renovation and restoration of the 1937 art-deco style courthouse. Not only a historic restoration, but the completed project had to meet modern day codes and included replacement of all mechanical and electrical systems.

In order to preserve the historic spaces, the finishes were carefully removed or protected until they could be properly and meticulously replaced or restored in the building. These materials included courtroom custom wood paneling, terrazzo flooring, marble walls and steps, custom metal railings and historic lighting. The entire exterior façade, including stone, marble, stone pediments, and steel awning windows went through an extensive restoration process. The re-construction of the exterior public terrace contained two granite fountains, stone pavers, plinths and steps, which were also a part of the renovation / restoration process. All required work had to be accomplished while the structure was being altered to accommodate two new elevators and stair shafts, requiring slab and beam removal and replacement for 11 stories from the basement to new penthouses on the roof. Innovative means and methods had to be incorporated throughout the construction process in order to maintain a dry building as the existing roof was removed and the entire building re-roofed.

Thousands of people have used this facility over the past 70+ years and it is anticipated that this restored landmark will serve the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County for many more years to come. Hardaway Construction Corp. was proud to be a part of the restoration team.
