Davidson County Criminal Justice Center

The renovation of the Criminal Justice Center (CJC) was scheduled in nine phases.  Through every phase Hardaway worked closely with the Davidson County Sheriff's Department to coordinate and schedule the movement of staff and detainees to maintain DCSO operations yet allowing construction progression.

The main features of this project included:  modernized booking and detention areas; additional elevators; improved security monitoring; expanded attorney / client area; improved management offices.

The construction of a bridge connector support tower on the west side of 2nd Avenue north was included.  The bridge connected the CJC to the Birch Building.  Also, the CJC Annex was renovated to provide a temporary space for some of the occupants of the CJC main building.  This area temporarily housed administrative and court functions.  The Basement, First, and Second Floors of the CJC were renovated to make usage more efficient.  Most of the areas affected in the main building were support areas rather than holding areas.

During renovation, Hardaway worked with other functions within the CJC such as court clerks, officers, judges, the bonds office, warrants, and the police department.  Hardaway managed the project and its impact on these departments through building strong lines of communication and flexibility of construction schedule and methods.

The CJC was built almost 25 years ago and had been modified as necessary to fit the needs of the period.  During the current renovation, Hardaway encountered several unknowns which were evaluated and addressed by the Design-Build team to minimize cost while maximizing construction efficiency.
